Mom & Dad Visit Recap
My dear sweet parents came to visit me, and we had a rockin’ great time. Here’s what we did.
On Saturday, we went to breakfast at Bully Brew Coffee House. I had a breakfast burrito and a chocolate covered strawberry mocha, which were so stunningly delicious. We then went to the mall solely for the bookstore and antique store. The bookstore’s selection did let me down a little bit, but that’s kind of the nature of used bookstores, the quality of the books in stock ebbs and flows. I shockingly didn’t purchase one singular item at the antique store, but I was tempted to more than once. In the depths of my soul, though, I feel that most of the items were severely overpriced, and I’m a girl on a budget. Some items of note at the antique store were a very odd baby statue, a badge with a chicken that said “It’s weally good” (yes, spelled like that), and a lamp with REAL DEER FEET as the base of it. I think I’m still traumatized by that last one. They also had Cookie Monster and Big Bird stuff, but no Elmo. What does a girl have to do to find some vintage Elmo? We then wandered around Target for a while, which healed a very specific part of my soul. It’s been so long since I wandered around a Target with no time limit and no specific shopping list. I felt like I was in high school again, goofing off in public, and finding reasons to laugh at everything. It sounds very mundane, but it was one of the most joyful parts of the weekend. With about half an hour left before the movie started, we went to the candy store and got Chippers (chocolate covered potato chips) and sea salt caramels.

Next up, we went to see Wonka, which I had seen once before, but my parents had not. I loved it just as much the second time. If I hear that groovy rhythm of Hatful of Dreams, I’m dancing. There’s no other option. Not to mention Timmy T covered in chocolate. I don’t want to elaborate, you have to just watch the movie and understand. Then we went to dinner and ended the night with Incredibles 2 while I made cinnamon rolls for the next day.
Sunday morning, we hit up the historic church in a nearby town. It’s a very pretty building with major small town vibes. Nothing like the priest staring us down because he doesn’t recognize us. After church, we went back to the apartment and had brunch/lunch (it was like 1pm), and my boss came over to hang out with us. She’s a supervisor and a friend, and my parents love her. The cinnamon rolls were good, but the egg bite recipe needs some work. They’re just like weirdly wet? I don’t know how else to describe it. After we ate, we played Wavelength, which I’ve seen all over. It was really fun! The highlight of it was my mom admitting that Timothée Chalamet is a beautiful man. Then, we played We’re Not Really Strangers. I’d been wanting to play this FOREVER, and it pretty much lived up to my expectations. The first level, perception, was really interesting, but not too intense. By the second level, connection, I was crying for sure. It’s just such an interesting thing to get to know your parents all over again when you’re an adult. I will definitely be bringing the game with to the lake this summer to play with other family members.
We absolutely don’t care about the Superbowl, so we didn’t watch any of it, but we assumed going to dinner at the local sports bar was going to be intense. It was weirdly dead in there, though, except for one man who had a lot to say (and swear) about the game. The food, however, did not let us down. This place has, legitimately, the best tomato soup on the planet. My mom and I are currently in the process of trying to replicate it at home, but we haven’t perfected it yet. On the topic of the Superbowl, though, I had a professor who told us that the word “Superbowl” is trademarked, so they can’t use it in commercials. Now, I can’t get over it every time a commercial uses the phrase “The Big Game” instead. We ended the night with The Princess Bride. I forgot how long it’d been since I’d watched it, so it was fun and extremely nostalgic to watch it again.
Monday morning, I made them breakfast sandwiches, they came to work with me for a few minutes, and then they hit the road. It was such a great weekend, I just wish it had been longer. Maybe next year!
