My Girl Friday

I was never a cat person until I house-sat for my sister and got to hang out with her wonderful sweet cat, Whiskey. Then, two years later (I think?), I graduated college and moved into my first apartment. After 6 months alone, I knew I wanted a cat so tremendously bad. To be fair, it wasn't just Whiskey that changed my mind; it was also Emily's cat Jerome, Jill's cat Finn, and the cat at the glass blowing place in Wisconsin, Ascoobis. Technically the glass blowing cat's name is Derp, but we call her Ascoobis because of Scooby Doo in Where's My Mummy

Anyway, I scooted over to the website of my local humane society and immediately knew which one I wanted. At the time, her name was Marigold, but that's none of my business. I spent a couple weeks showing everyone the picture of her from the website, but I wanted to wait until after I spent a week and a half home for winter break.

The day after I got back to my apartment, I went to the Humane Society to see if she was still there. Now I assumed I would have to like fill out an adoption application and then wait a couple of days, but no. I held her and was like yah she's the love of my life and they said okay great we'll get her ready to go. So I had to leave her with a friend while I went to Walmart and bought some supplies. I wasn't mad about the name Marigold, but I named her Friday after the AI that Tony Stark builds in Avengers: Age of Ultron. The plus side is that I can also sing Friday I'm in Love to her.

The MOMENT I set up the litterbox, she used it like a champ, and I knew that I was extremely lucky to have her as my first cat. She explored around the apartment and was very vocal the first night (she honestly still is, she's just a talkative gal). When I first adopted her, she was a little over a year old, her birthday is October 22, 2021. Now, she's 2, and she's my favorite little lady. Her favorite toy is a little yellow dumpling, she likes to stare out the window, and she hates being brushed. Every night she sleeps curled up by my feet.

Her quirkiest behavior is balance beaming on the pantry door. It makes me nervous, but I also think it's hilarious. She also occasionally figures out how to turn on the keyboard in my room, and then she enjoys being a musician. She drives me nuts with her tendency to stick her stinky little paws into things she's not supposed to be in (tangled in my necklaces, dipped in a bowl of cake batter, etc.)

I have legitimately thousands of pictures of her on my phone. I fully understand that because she's mine, I'm a little biased, but I think she's just the cutest thing this planet has to offer.

Names we call her include (but are not limited to):

  • Fried egg

  • Rascal Flatts

  • Miss stinky poo poo paws

  • Looney Tooney

  • Kitty witty

  • Kitten bo bitten

  • Boonin bo toonin loonin

  • Cute stuff (my bo boot stuff)

  • Sweetness (my bo beetness)

  • Gorgeous bo borgeous

  • Baby honey

  • Dumplin bo bumplin (sometimes pronounced dumpwin bo bumpwin)

  • Sweety beety

  • Teeny tiny (or teenus tinus)

  • Bingo bango

  • Stinker binker (or stinky binky)

In conclusion, I am an absolutely insufferable cat woman now. However, I have no regrets. I will continue to take so many pictures and create increasingly bizarre nicknames for her.
